7 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking – Rongai Route Overview
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, close to the Kenyan border. It is less crowded and offers a gradual ascent, making it suitable for those seeking a quieter, scenic climb with good chances of success. This 7-day itinerary includes ample acclimatization time for a safe and rewarding trek to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m (19,341 ft).

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Elevation: 2,200m to 2,750m
Distance: ~6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Forest
Arrive at Rongai Gate, register, and start the trek through dense forest to Simba Camp. Enjoy views of wildlife and rich vegetation.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Overnight: Simba Camp
Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp
Elevation: 2,750m to 3,570m
Distance: ~8 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Ascend steadily through moorland to Second Cave Camp, passing beautiful landscapes and diverse flora.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Overnight: Second Cave Camp
Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Elevation: 3,570m to 4,300m
Distance: ~8 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Trek through open moorland and alpine desert, enjoying sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks. Reach Kikelewa Camp for the night.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Elevation: 4,300m to 4,550m
Distance: ~4 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
A shorter hike to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, nestled at the base of the rugged Mawenzi Peak. Rest and prepare for summit attempt.

Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 4,550m to 4,700m
Distance: ~7 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut, the final camp before summit night.

Overnight: Kibo Hut
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Kikelewa Camp (Summit Day)
Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then descend to 4,300m
Distance: ~18 km total
Hiking Time: 12–14 hours total
Habitat: Arctic to alpine desert
Begin the summit climb around midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak for sunrise, then descend to Kikelewa Camp to rest.

Day 7: Kikelewa Camp to Rongai Gate – Transfer to Moshi/Arusha
Elevation: 4,300m to 2,200m

Descend back to Rongai Gate through moorland and forest. Receive your summit certificate and transfer to Moshi or Arusha.
